Fun]

the band says in the torrent release notes:
"Now that we’re no longer constrained by a record label, we’ve decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them."
"I steal music too, I'm not gonna say I don't. But it's tough not to resent people for doing it when you're the guy making the music, that would like to reap a benefit from that."
Nine Inch Nails has released its new album, Ghosts I-IV, online and in a somewhat Radiohead-eque way. You'll recall Radiohead released its In Rainbows album with "you" naming the price. Nine Inch Nails doesn't go quite that far, but it's still the sort of experimentation more bands

Feb,26,2008,BERLIN (Reuters) - Police dogs in the German city of Duesseldorf are being fitted out with blue rubber shoes to protect their paws while walking the beat."The dogs aren't too keen yet, but with a few weeks' training they should be used to them," Andre Hartwich, a spokesman for police in the western city, said Monday.
Hartwich said shards of glass and sharp objects get stuck between the cobbles of Duesseldorf's old town and are dangerous for the canine squad.
"The shoes will protect their paws on patrol," he said.
Some 20 German shepherds are being taught to walk and work with their new footwear in time for a police fashion show in March.
The blue synthetic rubber shoes, modeled on a design made for sled-pulling Canadian huskies, will cost about 15 euros ($22.22) each, he said.

- [Fun]
Predicting the death of a patient, even an elderly, demented one, is an inexact science, even for a doctor with decades of medical experience. But a cat in a Providence, R.I., nursing home, an animal shelter refugee named Oscar, seems to have a sixth sense about when residents in the home's advanced dementia unit are about to pass away. And his actions can sometimes
help alert the staff to notify family members in time for them to get to the nursing home to tell their loved ones goodbye.Three animal behavior experts say the explanation about Oscar sensing a smell associated with dying is a plausible one.
"I suspect he is smelling some chemical released just before dying," says Margie Scherk, DVM, president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners, an organization devoted to improving the health and well-being of cats, and a veterinarian in Vancouver, British Columbia. "Cats can smell a lot of things we can't," she says. "And cats can certainly detect
illness.""Cats have a superb sense of smell," adds Jill Goldman, PhD, a certified applied animal behaviorist in Laguna Beach, Calif. In Oscar's case, she says, keeping a dying resident company may also be learned behavior. "There has been ample opportunity for him to make an association between 'that' smell [and death]," she says.
While the sense of smell may be one explanation, there could be another, says Daniel Estep, PhD, a certified applied animal behaviorist in Littleton, Colo. "One of the things that happen with people who are dying is that they are not moving around much. Maybe the cat is picking up on the fact that the person on the bed is very quiet. It may not be smell or sounds, but just the lack of movement."

Bill Gates invests in Gay.com, PlanetOut - [Random]
God bless you,Bill!this world will be a better place without stupid discrimination towards race, religion or sex.
--------
Bill Gates, operating through his Cascade Investment arm, is among the investors participating in the $26.2 million funding of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender online community PlanetOut.
PlanetOut, which trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker LGBT and also operates the Web site Gay.com, went public at $9 per share in October 2004.
But since that time, the stock has been in free fall. It closed today at $1.59, up 15 percent.
Last year, PlanetOut reported revenue of $68.6 million --up 93 percent over 2005. But it also reported a net loss of $3.7 million last year.
Gates is not really known for investing in money-losing Internet companies, with some of the Microsoft co-founder's bets including companies such as Six Flags, Four Seasons Hotels, Pacific Ethanol and others.

Desperate Iraqi Refugees Turn to Sex Trade in Syria - [Random]

MARABA, Syria — Back home in Iraq, Umm Hiba’s daughter was a devout schoolgirl, modest in her dress and serious about her studies. Hiba, who is now 16, wore the hijab, or Islamic head scarf, and rose early each day to say the dawn prayer before classes.
